Kids Bikes Buyers Guide
Since we have now reviewed some of the best kids bikes we will now move to the buyer’s guide.
While it may seem easy at first glance Buying a kids bike is a little trickier than you might think. For this reason here in our buyers guide we will let you know the kinds of features you should be looking for when shopping for a kids bike.
Selecting The Right Size Bike For Your Child
If you’ve shopped for a bike before then you probably know that there are different sized bikes to fit all the different sized children. A standard sized adult bike will fit anyone who falls within the 5 to 6 feet range, The same sort of thing is true when it comes to kids bikes.
But the big difference is when an adult bike is too large or too small for them they are simply uncomfortable while riding, whereas a child’s bike that is too large or small for them could be dangerous in that they might not be able to reach the brakes in order to stop themselves.
So clearly selecting a bike that is the right size for your child is extremely important.
This is one of the main reasons why on our best kids bikes list we included a wide variety of different bikes to give parents the opportunity to find a high-quality bike for their child no matter what size they are.
Experts recommend that parents use wheel size as the main measurement when deciding which bike to buy for their child.
What you’re measuring for and you’ll know that it’s the right size when your child is able to sit on the seat of the bike and put both feet flat on the ground on either side of the bike.
They should not have to tip to at all when reaching for the ground.
Once they learn how to ride a little better then you can get them a bike where they have to tip to a little bit to reach the ground. But even then they still have to be able to reach the brakes.
It is hard to discuss size because it is largely based on how big or small your particular child is.
Generally speaking here’s how to figure out the appropriate size bike for your child.
Children 3 and under should get a bike with 12″ wheels.
Children between the ages of 3 and 5 will be better off with 14″ wheels.
Children between the ages of 6 and 8 will do well on a bike that has 16″ wheels.
And finally, children between the age of 8 and 12 will be fine on a bike with wheels that are between 20″ and 24″. Depending on their height.
Please be aware that these are general estimations, and will depend a lot on your child’s riding level, as well as just how quickly they are growing.
Handbrakes vs Pedal Brakes
Another very important consideration is the type of brakes on your child’s bike. This comes down to what kind they are best able to use. Most of the time adults are more familiar with handbrakes, while children will be able to make use of pedal brakes a little easier.
Some of the bikes that are on the best kids bikes list come with back-pedal brakes.
If you’re not familiar with pedal brakes they’re on the back of the bike. The biggest advantage of pedal brakes is you won’t have to teach kids to use them. This makes them a real popular option on kids bikes. They also need far less maintenance.
Be aware however that They do have a few drawbacks. A lot of bike riders don’t care for them because they have a greater chance of failing compared to handbrakes.
We don’t feel that there is a single right answer when it comes to brakes. We have included bikes with both kinds of brakes on the best kids bikes list since we understand that it really just comes down to the type a parent prefers.
The Weight of the Bike
The last thing we’ll discuss is the weight of the bike you’re buying for your child. When you buy a bike for an adult the weight of the bike normally doesn’t matter. However, when you shop for kids bike the bikes weight has to be factored in.
Bikes can be heavy and since they may not have developed fully you should be careful that you don’t buy them a bike that ends up being too heavy for them.
One rule that many go by is that your child’s bike should be about half his or her body weight. Otherwise, they might struggle when it comes to steering the bike.
Ideally, if you can you’ll be better off if you find a bike that is less than 40% of the child’s body weight. If this is not possible, then using the 50% criteria will probably do just fine.
